Transitional-Living Program

Do you need a place to stay? If you’re a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning young person without a place to call home, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center can help. Through the Center’s transitional-living program, young people (ages 18-24) stay for as long as 18 months while working toward independence and self-sufficiency.

The First Step to Independent Living…

This is a one-of-a-kind transitional residence in the heart of Hollywood, where youth who don’t have a home of their own and have been turned away from their families find a home environment. While you’re living here, our staff will help you find and maintain a job, enroll in school, and manage your savings so you can succeed once you are living on your own.

 Housing
Dorm-style rooms accommodate co-ed youth with a dresser, closet space and freedom to decorate your space. Residents who do well in the program can move to a room with more space, a television and a DVD player.

In addition to 24 beds for residents, the facility includes six beds for overnight stays for youth in immediate need.

Case Management
Our case-management staff will work with you to maintain your appointments, track your progress, and help you through challenges. You’ll get counseling and support from Center staff.

Support Staff
Caring and helpful staff are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help you find the resources you need, to listen to your concerns, and to share in celebration of your accomplishments.

3 Hot Meals A Day
Each day, residents enjoy amazing meals prepared by the Residential Dietary Coordinator. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the community dining room. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about proper nutrition, food handling and safety tips and get a chance to prepare a meal for their housemates.

Savings Plan
The savings program prepares you for independent living by helping you generate savings to get you started in your own apartment. All services are free. Once employed, you’ll be required to put 80% of your earnings in a savings account, all of which is given back at the end of your stay.

Support Group
Based on your case plan or interest, we offer weekly support groups. Topics include financial planning, employment preparation, health education, and assistance in finding affordable housing.

Living Room with TV & DVDs
On your days off and in the evenings, you have free reign to relax in our living room, watch TV and enjoy our DVD collection.

Computers & Internet Access
You can use our computer lab to look for a job, get your class schedule or check your e-mail.

Social Outings
Outings planned by staff and residents include movies, hiking, art museums and more.
