Legal Document

The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's Legal Services Department can help you if:

  • You been fired or discriminated against because of your gender identity and/or sexual orientation;

  • You have been the victim of a hate crime, harassment or partner abuse;

  • You need assistance with the preparation of a legal document;

  • You and your partner want information about how to protect each other legally;

  • Legal Clinic Hate Crimes

    The Center’s Legal Clinic offers one-on-one attorney consultations on a no- or low-cost basis to those who need counsel regarding a wide-range of legal issues, including business, civil rights, consumer, criminal, employment, family, government benefits, immigration, insurance, landlord/tenant issues, personal injury, and wills and estates.

    People who are or are perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and/or HIV-positive are often targeted for hate crimes and hate incidents. If you have been the victim of violence, threats, harassment or vandalism, the Center’s Anti-Violence Project can help you.

    Document Preparation

    Domestic Violence

    Need help preparing legal documents? The Center’s Pro Per Project can provide no- or low-cost assistance to assist you prepare legal documents related to a name or gender change, a restraining order, you will and/or powers of attorneys.

    Certain fees do apply but may be waived if you income and assets fall below a certain level. There may be a maximum income or asset limits for some services.

    Domestic abuse is a pattern of behavior in which a partner or former partner tries to control thoughts, beliefs or actions and may include physical, sexual and /or economic abuse.  The Center’s Domestic Violence Legal Advocacy Project provides culturally competent legal assistance to LGBT domestic violence victims.

    Lawyer Referral Service

    HIV & AIDS Legal Issues

    If you can afford to pay for an attorney, our State Bar-certified Lawyer Referral Service (LRS#0041) can refer you to an experienced attorney. There is a $25 processing fee, which entitles the client to an initial visit with the referral attorney.

    The Center is a founder of the HIV & AIDS Legal Services Alliance (HALSA), which offers direct one-on-one pro bono legal representation to people living with HIV and AIDS who have an HIV-related legal problem. The scope of services includes immigration, guardianships, discrimination, public and private benefits, debtor relief and bankruptcy, simple estate planning, and housing.
